Sub-adult female tiger found dead in Mayudia post fatal attack on policeman

Itanagar, Feb 5: A couple of days after a tiger attack claimed the life of a police personnel, the carcass of a sub-adult female tiger was recovered from the Mayudia area along the Roing-Anini road, officials said.

According to Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary, Mito Rumi, the carcass was found on Wednesday during a search operation launched to locate the big cats involved in the incident. The tiger was found with a gunshot injury.

Rumi said a post-mortem examination was conducted on the carcass, during which the bullet was recovered. He added that the dead tiger is strongly suspected to be one of the animals involved in the fatal attack on Head Constable (WT) late Chow Chikseng Manpang.

The police personnel was reportedly attacked and killed by tigers on Monday evening around 7-7.30 pm while returning from Anini towards Roing on his motorcycle. His mutilated remains were recovered the following day, officials said.

“The incident involved two sub-adult tigers. We believe they are siblings rather than a mating pair. The recovered animal is a female, while the gender of the second tiger is yet to be ascertained,” the DFO said.

He further informed that a wildlife offence report has been lodged against unknown person(s) in connection with the gunshot injury found on the tiger.

Forest officials said search and monitoring operations are continuing in the area to track the second tiger and prevent further incidents.
