PM hails Arunachal's patriotism, progress on 40th Statehood Day

Itanagar, Feb 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday conveyed his heartfelt greetings to the people of Arunachal Pradesh on the occasion of the State’s 40th Statehood Day, describing it as a land of patriotism, cultural richness and immense potential.

In a message addressed to Chief Minister Pema Khandu which was read out by the Chief Secretary at the Statehood Day event here, the Prime Minister said Arunachal Pradesh, the state that first greets the rising sun in India, embodies radiant patriotism and unity. He noted that the tradition of greeting one another with “Jai Hind” reflects the deep national pride and spirit of harmony among its people.

Highlighting the journey of the state since attaining statehood on February 20, 1987, Modi said Arunachal Pradesh has transformed significantly, with sustained efforts to improve connectivity, infrastructure and welfare delivery. He observed that one of the key concerns in the past was limited connectivity, which the government has worked to address by constructing thousands of kilometres of roads in remote and border areas over the last decade. He cited major projects such as Donyi Polo Airport and the Sela Tunnel as milestones that demonstrate the Centre’s commitment to ensuring all-round connectivity and inclusive development in the frontier state.

Referring to border development, the Prime Minister said he does not view border villages as “last villages” but as the “first villages” of the nation. He highlighted the Vibrant Villages Programme as a transformative initiative benefiting Arunachal Pradesh. Other central schemes such as Ujala, PM Kisan, Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY and the Jal Jeevan Mission have also strengthened welfare delivery in the state, he said.

Modi also praised the state’s vibrant tribal communities and their unique traditions, as well as their commitment to sustainability and community-driven initiatives. Recalling his interactions with Self Help Groups and traders during GST Bachat Utsav launch at Itanagar, he commended their innovation and entrepreneurship in promoting local products.

The Prime Minister further highlighted the documentation and digitisation of rare manuscripts in districts such as Tawang, West Kameng, Shi-Yomi, Upper Siang and Namsai under the Gyan Bharatam Mission, aimed at preserving the state’s rich intellectual and spiritual heritage. He also noted the government’s efforts to promote nature and adventure tourism in the state.

Appreciating the contributions of Arunachal’s sons and daughters — from soldiers guarding the nation’s frontiers to sportspersons, artists and civil servants, Modi said the people of the state have played a significant role in India’s growth and security. He fondly recalled his association with the former Chief Minister Late Dorjee Khandu and expressed confidence that the state would continue to scale new heights under its present leadership.

“May the dawn that first blesses Arunachal Pradesh each morning continue to symbolise hope, progress and unwavering patriotism for generations to come,” the Prime Minister said, conveying his best wishes once again on Statehood Day.
