Ruksin, Feb 22: In a powerful and desperate stand to protect their lives, land, and future generations, the mothers of Ngorlung–Ralung village have announced an indefinite hunger strike beginning February 23 at the Ralung Village Community Hall, demanding the immediate and permanent closure or relocation of the ferro-silicon factory operating at the Industrial Growth Centre (IGC), Niglok.
The protest is directed against the factory run by M/s Aether Alloys LLP, which the villagers allege has caused severe environmental degradation and posed serious health hazards to surrounding habitations. According to the protesting mothers, emissions and industrial activities from the plant have endangered the lives of residents, particularly women, children, and the elderly, while creating a climate of fear, anxiety, and uncertainty in the area.
The mothers have declared that no industrial gain can justify what they describe as the destruction of human lives and the environment. They asserted that thousands of innocent people cannot be made to suffer for the monetary benefit of a few. Warning of rising public anger, they said continued inaction by authorities would only intensify the agitation.
Announcing their decision, the mothers stated that the hunger strike will continue until the Government of Arunachal Pradesh gives a clear and written assurance to permanently shut down or relocate the factory away from human habitation. They emphasized that the protest would remain peaceful but resolute, reflecting their deep anguish and determination.
Calling the movement “a fight for survival rather than a matter of choice”, the protesters appealed to the state government, civil society, and concerned authorities to intervene urgently and prevent further harm to the community.
