Roing, Feb 27: A three-day skill development training programme on “Species Diversification to Augment Productivity and Return from Carp Polyculture” was successfully conducted at Roing by the Kolkata Centre of the ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education (ICAR-CIFE) in collaboration with the District Department of Fisheries.
The programme marked the beginning of a three-year initiative aimed at empowering fish farmers by imparting practical knowledge and technical skills to meet the rising demand for fish in the state. The project seeks to enhance income levels of socially backward farmers by promoting diversified carp aquaculture through the introduction of high-value, fast-growing compatible species, along with demonstration activities at farmers’ ponds.
The training was inaugurated by progressive farmer Jatin Pulu, who emphasized the need to adopt scientific fish farming practices to boost productivity and double farmers’ income. He encouraged participants to take full advantage of the initiative to expand modern aquaculture practices in the district and appreciated the efforts of ICAR-CIFE and the Department of Fisheries.
District Fisheries Officer Neriyang Jamoh highlighted the importance of advanced aquaculture methods in augmenting fish production. She urged participants to effectively utilize the technical knowledge and critical inputs such as lime, soil and water testing kits, and study materials provided during the programme.
Dr GH Pailan, Principal Scientist and Coordinator of ICAR-CIFE Kolkata Centre, conducted theory and practical sessions on nursery and rearing pond management, feed and feeding strategies, and cost-effective feed formulation. Dr. Dilip Kumar Singh, Scientist at ICAR-CIFE Kolkata Centre, delivered sessions on composite fish culture, species diversification, soil and water quality analysis, and fish health management.
A total of 25 fish farmers participated in the training and received essential aquaculture inputs. Participants expressed satisfaction with the hands-on exposure and reaffirmed their commitment to adopting improved fish farming techniques to enhance productivity and income.
