ITANAGAR, Mar 8: Sangay Lhaden Sports Academy (SLSA) on Sunday celebrated International Women’s Day and concluded the three-day FIT India Women’s Week with a series of motivational and fitness activities aimed at encouraging women’s participation in sports.
The day began with an energetic Zumba fitness session conducted by Ibi Lollen, the first Indian woman certified as a referee by the World Armwrestling Federation. She is also a two-time bronze medallist in the senior women’s 70 kg category at the Asian Arm Wrestling Championship held in Uzbekistan. Zumba trainer Gymar Najir assisted in leading the lively fitness session for women athletes of the Academy. The programme also included mini fitness challenges such as plank holding and skipping competitions.
An interactive programme themed “When She Moves, India Moves” featured a motivational talk by ‘Miss Arunachal 2025’ Taba Jumshi. She encouraged young athletes to build confidence, determination and self-belief, urging them to overcome societal barriers and pursue their dreams through hard work and resilience.
The programme also included a success story session by SLSA athletes. Elite Wushu athlete Neyman Wangsu shared her journey after winning three silver medals at the Moscow Wushu Stars 2025 and a gold medal at the 38th National Games 2025. Rising Taekwondo athlete Dakyir Basar also spoke about her experiences after winning gold in the Under-38 kg category at the 70th SGFI U-17 Boys & Girls National School Games 2025-26.
Vice Chairman of the Sports Authority of Arunachal Bengia Yaying Tadar attended the programme as the chief guest. In her address, she highlighted the importance of gender equality and urged society to support women in sports and other fields. She advised athletes to maintain discipline, balance education with sports and respect their coaches and teachers.
During the programme, several athletes of SLSA were felicitated with “Iron Lady” and “Rising Star” recognitions for their achievements at national and international competitions. Among those honoured were Radha Bangsia, Rakhe Sumpa, Dakyir Basar, Ongnu Lukha, Luna Techi Tara, Mercy Ngaimong, Neyman Wangsu and Mepung Lamgu.
The event was attended by Sports Director Tadar Appa, Deputy Director Mala Lingi, SLSA Principal Likha Vidha, sports officers, coaches and officials of the Department of Sports.
The programme concluded with a call to encourage greater participation of women in sports and leadership roles, reaffirming the commitment of the Department of Sports and SLSA to nurture young women athletes and create more opportunities for them to excel.
