DUA submits petition to CM seeking ban on tobacco, gutka and pan masala

Itanagar, Mar 9: A delegation of the Dream for United Arunachal (DUA) called on Chief Minister Pema Khandu at the Chief Minister’s office in the State Legislative Assembly on Monday and submitted a petition seeking a statewide ban on tobacco, gutka and pan masala products.

The delegation was led by DUA chairman Gumjum Haider, a former State Information Commissioner, who said the demand was driven by growing concerns over the public health risks posed by the widespread use of such products, particularly among the youth.

Haider stated that the easy availability of tobacco, gutka and pan masala has led to serious health problems, including oral cancer and heart-related diseases, while also contributing to the deterioration of public spaces through spitting and littering.

He said such practices have affected the cleanliness of important public institutions, including hospitals, educational institutions and government offices, which runs contrary to the vision of a clean and vibrant Arunachal Pradesh.

The DUA chairman also emphasized that such addictions are alien to the indigenous cultural values of the state, adding that preserving public health and environmental cleanliness should be a priority for sustainable development.

Following the meeting with the Chief Minister, the DUA delegation also met Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein at the Assembly office to apprise him of the petition and stress the need for a coordinated administrative response.

The organization further urged the government to conduct large-scale awareness and sensitization programmes and involve local leaders, including corporators and Panchayat representatives, to spread the campaign to even the remotest villages.

CM Khandu described the interaction as “meaningful” and appreciated the organization’s efforts and vision for a stronger, healthier and more united Arunachal Pradesh.
