Bid to reduce LPG dependency: Biogas plant launched at CCBF Nirjuli

Itanagar, Mar 27: In a significant step towards promoting clean energy and reducing dependency on LPG, the Government of Arunachal Pradesh inaugurated a biogas plant at the Central Cattle Breeding Farm (CCBF), Nirjuli.

The 2×15 cubic metre (30 CuM) biogas plant, comprising two units, was fast-tracked under the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary & Dairy Development (AHV&DD) following the direction of Minister Gabriel D Wangsu. The project was commissioned on Friday with support from Arunachal Pradesh Energy Development Agency (APEDA).

The CCBF, Nirjuli, houses around 150 cattle, generating approximately 5–6 quintals of cow dung daily. While the waste was earlier used primarily as manure, it is now being converted into clean biogas for cooking and lighting. The plant also produces nutrient-rich slurry that enhances soil fertility.

More than 12 residential families within the farm premises have been connected to the biogas system, significantly reducing their dependence on LPG for daily cooking needs.

The inauguration was attended by Commissioner (Planning, Power & NCER) R K Sharma and Secretary (AHV&DD) Y V V J Rajasekhar, along with officials from APEDA and the AHV&DD department.

Following the launch, Minister Wangsu directed the department to prepare proposals for expanding the plant’s capacity and replicating similar biogas projects across state-run farms. He emphasized that efficient utilization of cattle waste not only generates clean energy but also reduces environmental pollution, promotes organic farming, and cuts reliance on LPG.

Project in-charge Dr Taba Heli stated that the initiative represents a meaningful step towards sustainable living by converting waste into valuable resources while contributing to a greener future.
