Itanagar, Apr 2: The Gauhati High Court Itanagar Permanent Bench Bar Association on Thursday organised a peaceful protest march in Itanagar condemning a recent life-threatening attack on advocate Gegum Lollen.
Hundreds of advocates, dressed in professional attire and carrying banners with slogans demanding justice and safety for legal practitioners, participated in the rally.
The procession began from Mithun Gate and culminated at the IG Park Tennis Court here.
The Association reiterated its demand for the immediate enactment of the “Advocates Protection Act” in Arunachal Pradesh to ensure the safety and security of legal professionals.
Bar Association vice president Duge Soki informed that the incident occurred on March 31 when three individuals, allegedly led by Likha Akash, attacked advocate Gegum Lollen at his residence-cum-chamber in Naharlagun.
According to the Association, Lollen had previously represented Akash in a case related to his disqualification as a presidential candidate of the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union. Following the dismissal of the petition, the accused allegedly held Lollen responsible and later assaulted him.
Soki stated that the attack on a legal practitioner has raised serious concern within the legal fraternity, prompting the protest to express solidarity and unity among advocates.
He added that all three accused have been arrested and legal proceedings are underway. Similar protests are also being organised by advocates in other districts of the state.
