Yak Reintroduction Prog launched in Mechuka to boost livelihoods

Itanagar, Apr 3: In a significant initiative to promote sustainable livelihoods and preserve traditional practices, the ICAR - National Research Centre on Yak (NRC on Yak) conducted a yak reintroduction programme at Mechuka in Shi-Yomi district, Arunachal Pradesh, on Friday.

The programme was held under the chairmanship of NRC on Yak Director Dr Mihir Sarkar with the objective of promoting livestock-based livelihoods, enhancing eco-tourism opportunities, and conserving the cultural heritage associated with yak rearing in the region.

The initiative was implemented in collaboration with the Jomlo Mongku Mithun Farmers Federation (JMMFF) and the Animal Husbandry Department, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, highlighting the importance of coordinated efforts to promote scientific yak husbandry to support tribal communities in high-altitude tribal areas.

The programme was coordinated by Dr Vijay Paul, along with JMMFF Chairman Tadang Tamut and Veterinary Officer Jumter Tali.

As part of the programme, six yaks, including four females and two males, were distributed to selected tribal farmers to enhance their livelihoods. Additionally, 45 farmers participated in awareness programmes on scientific yak rearing and received input support under the Scheduled Tribe Component (STC).

The initiative marks a step forward in promoting sustainable livestock development while empowering local communities in remote high-altitude regions of Arunachal Pradesh.
