ECI announces paid holiday for voters on polling days

NEW DELHI, Apr 3: The Election Commission of India has announced that all eligible voters will be granted a paid holiday on polling days during the general elections and bye-elections 2026.

The Commission had earlier declared the election schedule on March 15 for Legislative Assemblies of Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, along with bye-elections in eight constituencies across Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Nagaland and Tripura.

Polling will be held on April 9 in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Goa, Karnataka, Nagaland and Tripura, while Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Maharashtra will go to polls on April 23. In West Bengal, polling will be conducted in two phases on April 23 and 29.

Citing provisions under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the ECI stated that every employee in any business, trade, industrial undertaking, or establishment who is entitled to vote must be granted a paid holiday on the day of polling.

The Commission clarified that no wages shall be deducted for such leave, and any employer violating the provision will be liable for penalties. The benefit also extends to daily wage and casual workers.

Additionally, voters employed outside their registered constituencies will also be entitled to a paid holiday to enable them to exercise their franchise.

The Commission has directed all State and Union Territory governments to ensure strict compliance with these guidelines so that all electors can vote freely and conveniently.
