Pongtu Kuh Festival celebrated with traditional fervour in Tirap, Changlang

KHONSA/CHANGLANG, Apr 11: Pongtu Kuh, the premier agricultural festival of the Tutsa community, was celebrated with traditional fervour and gaiety across Tirap and Changlang districts on Saturday.

At Tutnu village in Tirap district, the celebration was attended by Tirap Zilla Parishad Chairperson John KK Matey as chief guest and Superintendent of Police Aditya as guest of honour. Khonsa East MLA Wanglam Sawin, also the chief patron of the celebration committee, emphasised the importance of preserving indigenous traditions, including festivals, folk songs, dances, and attire, noting their potential in promoting tourism.

Highlighting discipline and responsibility, SP Aditya urged youth to stay engaged in constructive activities and avoid unlawful practices, while appreciating the community’s commitment to cultural preservation. ZPC Matey also encouraged the younger generation to uphold their heritage and prioritise education while staying away from social evils.

Earlier, TPFC 2026 president Waangnan Bo elaborated on the significance of Pongtu Kuh, while ZPM Tutnu Block Nanhang Phuksa narrated the mythology of the festival, describing it as an ancient celebration marking seasonal transition before the onset of the rainy season.

Meanwhile, Pongtu Kuh was also celebrated with equal enthusiasm in Changlang district. The programme was graced by Deputy Speaker Kardo Nyigyor as chief guest and Mohesh Chai, Advisor to the Health Minister, as guest of honour. The event was attended by Speaker Tesam Pongte, along with MLAs Laisam Simai and Hamjong Tangha, besides other dignitaries.

Addressing the gathering, Nyigyor noted that most festivals in Arunachal Pradesh are closely linked to agriculture and lauded the Tutsa community for preserving its rich traditions.

Dr Chai encouraged the younger generation to remain connected to their cultural roots and appreciated the efforts of the Govt of Arunachal Pradesh in promoting heritage.

Speaker Pongte informed that Pongtu Kuh is celebrated annually on April 11 by the Tutsa community in Tirap and Changlang districts.

The celebrations at both locations featured traditional log drum performances and vibrant cultural programmes, reflecting the rich heritage and community spirit of the Tutsa people.
