Itanagar, Apr 13: Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Monday flagged in and felicitated the Arunachal Pradesh contingent that participated in the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026 held in Raipur, Chhattisgarh from March 25 to April 3, congratulating the athletes and coaches for their outstanding performance.
Arunachal Pradesh secured an impressive fifth position among 30 States and Union Territories, emerging as the best-performing state from the Northeast with a total of 11 medals including six gold, one silver and four bronze medals.
Addressing athletes, coaches, officials and members of sports associations during the felicitation ceremony, the Chief Minister termed the achievement a moment of pride for the state. He attributed the success to the dedication and discipline of the athletes, along with the guidance of coaches and support staff.
Highlighting the medal tally, Khandu informed that weightlifting contributed five gold, one silver and two bronze medals, while athletics added one gold in the 500 metres event. Both men’s and women’s football teams also secured bronze medals.
Congratulating the athletes, he said the performance reflects the growing strength of sports in Arunachal Pradesh and increasing youth participation in competitive events. He also acknowledged the role of team officials, including the Chief de Mission and coaches, in ensuring effective preparation of the contingent.
Referring to the Khelo India initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2017-18, Khandu noted that sports development across the country has gained significant momentum. He added that Arunachal Pradesh has also witnessed steady growth in sports infrastructure and facilities over the past decade.
The Chief Minister informed that the state has won over 60 medals in various Khelo India competitions since inception and has improved its standing in national events, including the recent National Games held in Uttarakhand, where Arunachal Pradesh finished among the top performers from the Northeast.
Emphasizing the role of sports in youth development, he said sports help instil discipline, leadership and determination. He reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure and promoting grassroots talent across all districts.
