Daporijo, Apr 19: Minister for Industries, Textile & Handicrafts, and IPR & Printing, Nyato Dukam on Saturday inaugurated the Weaver’s Craft Centre-cum-office building of Textile & Handicrafts Department at Daporijo in the presence of Upper Subansiri Deputy Commissioner Tasso Gambo.
Interacting with departmental officials and members of the public, the Minister said that the government is committed to upgrading the traditional weaving system with modern technology to enhance productivity and ensure the sustainable development of indigenous crafts and weaving products.
He assured that the remaining infrastructure and office equipment for the centre would be provided soon and directed the engineering wing to submit the necessary proposals and estimates to the government for further action.
During his visit to Upper Subansiri district, Dukam also inspected the ongoing ground development work of the Daporijo Secretariat building and reviewed the progress and quality of construction. He instructed the executing agency to complete the project on time while maintaining quality standards.
The minister further visited the Menga bridge collapse site, where an old bridge had recently given way under the load of a dumper truck. During the inspection, he directed the Border Roads Organisation and the district administration to ensure smooth vehicular movement and prioritize public safety, particularly with the monsoon season approaching.
Deputy Commissioner Tasso Gambo informed that the collapsed bridge was old and structurally weak, and that public notices had already been issued restricting the movement of overloaded vehicles. He said the bridge had been temporarily kept open only for light vehicles until the completion and testing of the new bridge.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident. Gambo added that a newly constructed RCC bridge over the Menga river, completed about a month ago, was opened for traffic on the same day following the collapse of the old bridge, ensuring uninterrupted vehicular movement.
