Itanagar, May 3: The Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ), supported by the Arunachal Press Club (APC), on Sunday observed World Press Freedom Day at the APC premises here, aligning with the global theme “Shaping a Future of Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security.”
As part of the observance, a documentary screening was organised in keeping with the union’s annual tradition. The film, “Cover-Up” by filmmaker Laura Poitras, profiles renowned investigative journalist Seymour Hersh and chronicles his five-decade career exposing major government scandals, including the My Lai massacre, Watergate, and the Abu Ghraib prison abuses.
Addressing the gathering, APUWJ president Dodum Yangfo paid tribute to journalists across the world who have lost their lives in the line of duty. He noted that while journalists strive to deliver timely and accurate information beyond borders, many continue to face grave risks due to inadequate security.
Emphasising the importance of a free press as the fourth pillar of democracy, Yangfo cautioned against any curtailment of press freedom. He also expressed concern over India’s declining position in global press freedom indices, underscoring the need for greater safeguards for journalists and media institutions.
Reflecting on the evolving nature of journalism, Yangfo highlighted the transition from traditional reporting to the era of social media and now Artificial Intelligence. He stressed that with increased influence comes greater responsibility, urging journalists to uphold ethical standards and professional integrity.
While noting that many mainland states have witnessed increased censorship, he observed that Arunachal Pradesh has so far remained relatively free from such challenges. He called on media professionals in the state to maintain this environment by practicing responsible journalism and engaging in introspection about the quality and impact of their reporting.
“I appeal to my fellow journalists to contribute towards shaping a future of peace by promoting press freedom for human rights, development and security. At the same time, the government must not intimidate journalists or interfere with the functioning of a free press,” he said.
APUWJ general secretary Sonam Jelly also spoke on the occasion, reiterating the importance of independent journalism and highlighting the ongoing efforts of APUWJ and APC to foster a strong, united, and free media community in the state.
Ziro Press Club and Seppa Press Club also marked the day by remembering fallen journalists and organising media-related activities.
