GANGTOK, May 10: In a significant initiative aimed at promoting tourism and women’s empowerment in border areas, the Indian Army has facilitated the establishment of a women-led café at an altitude of 13,000 feet near the revered Baba Harbhajan Singh Memorial Temple in East Sikkim.
Operated entirely by a local women’s team, the café has been set up under the Indian Army’s Ranbhoomi Darshan initiative and is expected to enhance visitor experience at the popular shrine while generating sustainable livelihood opportunities in the remote high-altitude region.
The project was conceptualised and facilitated by the Trishakti Corps in coordination with the civil administration and local stakeholders. Besides promoting tourism in strategically important border areas, the initiative also aims to showcase the region’s heritage and cultural significance.
The café is creating employment opportunities for local women and contributing to economic self-reliance and inclusive growth in remote communities. The initiative reflects strong military-civil cooperation and underlines the Indian Army’s continued commitment towards development and welfare activities in border regions. (PRO Defence, Guwahati)
