ACC&I backs CII proposals on phased fuel excise rollback

ITANAGAR, May 15: The Arunachal Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACC&I), an affiliated member of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), has extended support to the proposals and recommendations submitted by the CII to the Govt of India regarding the phased rollback of fuel excise duty cuts.

According to reports dated May 14, 2026, the CII proposed a gradual 6–9 month rollback of the Rs 10-per-litre excise duty cuts on petrol and diesel in order to ease the fiscal burden on the Govt while maintaining economic stability amid inflationary pressures.

The industry body suggested that the rollback should be implemented in phases rather than abruptly so that businesses and consumers get adequate time to adjust to changing fuel prices.

The CII further noted that despite elevated fuel costs, private capital expenditure witnessed a significant revival, rising by 67 percent to Rs 7.7 lakh crore by September 2025. It stated that the ongoing investment momentum requires stable and predictable policy support.

As part of its recommendations, the CII urged industries to voluntarily reduce fuel and power consumption by 3–5 percent over the next two quarters through improved logistics management and increased adoption of renewable energy sources.

To safeguard supply chains and support smaller enterprises, the industry body also proposed that larger corporations provide a 45-day MSME payment guarantee to help small suppliers cope with working capital challenges arising from higher fuel prices.

Additionally, companies were encouraged to absorb part of the rising input costs within their margins to minimize the burden on end consumers.

The proposals were made at a time when oil marketing companies were reportedly incurring daily losses of nearly Rs 1,000 crore due to rising global crude oil prices, as highlighted by the Petroleum Minister during the CII Annual Business Summit 2026.
