Workers’ welfare body reiterates demand

ITANAGAR, May 20: The Arunachal Pradesh Workers Welfare Society has reiterated its demand for action against illegal supply and engagement of inter-state migrant workers and contract labourers.

“Certain individuals, contractors and agencies are supplying labourers to both government and private sectors, without obtaining proper license through Act and Rule. Whereas it is a set rule that authorities have to issue Labour License or Registration of Establishment under the Contract Labour (R&A) Act 1970 or license through Registration of Establishment under Inter-State Migrant Workmen (Regulation of Employment & Condition of Services) Act 1079,” the acting president of the workers welfare body, Karbia Sonam said during a press conference here on Wednesday.

Claiming that due to the absence of strict action and implementation of the Act, he said that the workers continue to be exploited.

“To strengthen the safety measures of the citizens, the state government must frame a proper policy to end the issue once and for all,” Sonam said, asserting that it creates disturbance in the fair labour practices wages.

The Society also alleged that the contractors are deciding and paying minimum wages to workers by violating the guidelines. It cautioned that it would initiate legal recourse if the state government fails to bring in a proper policy to restrain individuals entering the state illegally.

The Society informed that a memorandum has been submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, Itanagar Capital Region regarding illegal supply of labourers.
