HAWAI, May 22: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Anjaw conducted a two-day field monitoring and survey of kiwifruit, plum orchards and piggery units on May 21 and 22 at Vibrant Village Chaglagam under the Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) project.
The programme aimed to evaluate field-level conditions, provide scientific technical guidance to farmers, and promote sustainable livelihood opportunities in the border village.
Earlier, in March 2025 and February 2026, KVK Anjaw had distributed a total of 2,500 kiwifruit saplings and 2,250 plum saplings among farmers of the area. In September 2025, the KVK further supported the farming community by distributing Hampshire cross piglets to 15 selected farmers of Chaglagam. Each beneficiary received two to three piglets along with feed, medicines, and training leaflets.
During the field visit, the KVK team observed healthy growth and vigorous establishment of the kiwifruit and plum saplings in farmers’ orchards. The team also inspected piggery units and found the pigs to be healthy and growing well, with some reported to be pregnant.
The KVK officials interacted with farmers and provided hands-on technical support. More than 25 farmers’ fields and 15 piggery units were covered during the monitoring exercise.
Subject Matter Specialist (Horticulture) Satveer Yadav highlighted the importance of orchard management practices such as weeding, training, pruning, and integrated pest and disease management in kiwifruit and plum cultivation.
SMS (Land & Water Conservation Engg) Ugarsain Sangwan advised farmers to adopt half-moon terraces on moderately sloping land in plum orchards to minimise topsoil erosion, conserve soil moisture, and improve overall orchard management. He also collected 25 soil samples from farmers’ fields for analysis of soil fertility and nutrient status to support better crop management practices.
Farmers appreciated the efforts of KVK, acknowledging that such programmes not only provide immediate solutions but also motivate them to adopt long-term sustainable farming practices in the region.
