DAPORIJO, May 24: Continuous heavy rainfall has triggered widespread devastation across Upper Subansiri district, damaging roads, bridges, houses and agricultural properties, while disrupting connectivity in several remote areas.
One of the worst-hit infrastructures was the Chetam–Guha PMGSY road, where a 13.5-metre RCC bridge span over the Nio Karo river between Jeke and Nilling collapsed completely due to flash flood caused by incessant rain, severely affecting movement of commuters and local residents.
At least five houses near Nio Karo under the Ningpin village area were damaged by landslides and flash floods triggered by the continuous downpour. Two fish ponds, a goatary farm house and several horticulture gardens were also washed away, causing major losses to affected families.
Giba circle has also suffered extensive damage, with several roads and bridges washed away by overflowing streams and landslides. Villages under the Luchi, Lute, Natam and Gyadu areas have reportedly been badly affected, leaving many locations cut off from the district headquarters.
The prolonged rainfall has disrupted normal life across many parts of the district, hampering transportation, communication and the supply of essential commodities.
Local residents have appealed to the district administration and the state government for immediate restoration of damaged roads and bridges, relief assistance for affected families, and adequate compensation for property and agricultural losses.
Officials are reportedly monitoring the situation as rainfall continues in several areas of the district.
