Tawang strengthens anti-drug measures, enhances tourist safety

TAWANG, May 27: The Tawang district administration and law enforcement agencies resolved to intensify coordinated efforts against drug abuse and trafficking during a district-level meeting of the Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office premise on Wednesday.

The meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo and attended by Superintendent of Police Tasi Darang, Additional Deputy Commissioner Rinchin Leta, DySP Tasso Kato, representatives of central intelligence agencies, paramilitary forces and other stakeholders.

Speaking at the meeting, SP Tasi Darang expressed concern over the growing menace of narcotics and stated that drug abuse is “destroying society like cancer.” He informed the house that Tawang Police has recently arrested accused persons involved in narcotics-related activities and seized 12.6 grams of suspected heroin during enforcement operations.

Highlighting collaborative anti-drug initiatives, the SP said Tawang Police, in coordination with Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel at Lungla and local villagers, had also carried out destruction drives against wild cannabis plantations across different parts of the district.

Emphasizing citizen-centric policing, the SP also shared that Tawang Police has initiated the deployment of traffic personnel as tourist police to assist visitors to Tawang, along with the activation of a dedicated police post for tourists.

DC Namgyal Angmo urged citizens to actively cooperate with the administration by reporting suspicious activities and acting as the “eyes and ears” of law enforcement agencies. She stressed the importance of strengthening intelligence gathering and maintaining close coordination among all stakeholders to effectively tackle drug trafficking and related crimes.

While noting that Tawang continues to witness a comparatively low crime rate, the DC cautioned against complacency and underscored the need for sustained awareness and preventive measures, especially concerning child protection and prevention of drug abuse in society.

Assistant Commissioner Sange Norbu, Officer-in-Charge of Tawang Police Station Inspector N Angu, and representatives from the Taxi Union, Hoteliers Association, Market Welfare Committee and various government departments also participated in the discussion and shared their suggestions.

The meeting concluded with all stakeholders reaffirming their commitment towards coordinated action, public awareness and stronger preventive mechanisms to combat drug abuse in the district.

Earlier in the day, the DC ALSO reviewed the ongoing houselisting operations under Census 2027 with Deputy Director of Census Operations Phiralin Passah and Statistical Investigator Saksham Kohli, who are on an official visit to Tawang. (DIPRO)
