Arunachal women playing transformative role in society: Guv

Itanagar, May 27: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt General (Retd) KT Parnaik on Wednesday said that women in the state are highly active in social, economic and community life, making significant contributions across sectors ranging from agriculture and entrepreneurship to governance and social campaigns.

The Governor made the remarks during a meeting with National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, who called on him at Lok Bhavan in Itanagar as part of her three-day official visit to Arunachal Pradesh from May 27 to 29.

During the interaction, the two discussed issues and challenges concerning women’s welfare, safety, empowerment, grievance redressal and socio-economic advancement in the state.

Highlighting the role of women in the state, Parnaik appreciated the growing success of women self-help groups (SHGs), stating that they are playing a transformative role in improving livelihoods, promoting financial independence and uplifting rural communities.

The Governor also spoke about the active participation of women in anti-drug campaigns, cleanliness drives, health and hygiene awareness programmes, and preservation of traditional handloom, textiles and indigenous cultural heritage.

He noted that across Arunachal Pradesh’s diverse tribal communities, women have traditionally served as custodians of family values, customs and community harmony.

Emphasising that the state’s progress is closely linked with women’s empowerment, the Governor said Arunachali women possess immense resilience, dignity and cultural wisdom. He stressed that greater participation of women in education, governance, entrepreneurship and nation-building is essential for building a progressive, inclusive and self-reliant Arunachal Pradesh.

The Governor also appreciated the upcoming “Jan Sunvai – Rashtriya Mahila Aayog Aapke Dwaar” programme being organised by the National Commission for Women in collaboration with the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women in Itanagar on May 29.

He said such initiatives provide an important platform for women to voice their concerns, seek support and strengthen awareness regarding their rights and opportunities.

The Jan Sunwai aims to provide women with a direct platform to present grievances and seek immediate assistance and redressal. Women from Itanagar and nearby districts have been encouraged to attend the programme, while walk-in complaints will also be accepted during the session.

Chairperson of the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women, Yalem Taga Burang, was also present during the meeting.
