ITANAGAR, May 29: The Department of Zoology (IUGS), Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU), today organized an Orientation Programme for the Summer Internship of the first batch of BSc Zoology students under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
In a significant milestone for the department as the first group of undergraduate Zoology students embark on internships as an integral component of the NEP 2020 curriculum, aimed at promoting experiential learning and skill development.
The orientation programme was coordinated by Dr Jacob Ngukir, Internship In-charge, with the support of Dr Krishnakshi Misra, Dr Hage Assung, and Dr Abprez T Kimsing. Faculty members briefed the students on the objectives, expectations, and professional responsibilities associated with the programme.
Addressing the gathering, Prof D N Das, HoD Zoology, spoke on the value and significance of being a Zoologist and emphasized the importance of internships in the modern competitive world. He encouraged the students to utilize the opportunity to gain practical knowledge, professional exposure, and valuable field experience beyond classroom learning.
A total of 18 BSc Zoology students are undertaking their summer internship at six reputed institutions across the State, namely the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), Itanagar; National Research Centre on Yak, Dirang; North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Folk Medicine Research (NEIAFMR), Pasighat; Pakke Tiger Reserve, Seijosa; Tarin Aquafarm, Ziro; and Community Health Centre (CHC), Pasighat.
The internship programme is expected to provide students with hands-on experience in wildlife research, biodiversity conservation, aquaculture, traditional medicine, animal health, and public health sectors. It will also help bridge the gap between academic learning and practical application, thereby enhancing students' employability and professional competence.
