DyCM felicitates meritorious students, stresses education & cultural preservation Mein announces free UPSC coaching for five Tai Ahom students

NAMSAI, May 31: Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein attended a felicitation programme for meritorious Class X and XII students of the 2025-26 academic session, organised by the All Tai Ahom Students' Union (ATASU), Namsai District Committee, at the Multipurpose Cultural Hall, Namsai.

Addressing the gathering, Mein congratulated the students on their academic achievements and commended their hard work, dedication and perseverance. He highlighted the significant progress made in the field of education in Arunachal Pradesh over the years.

Recalling his student days, the Deputy Chief Minister noted that educational opportunities were limited in the state, with JNC Pasighat, being the only institution of higher learning. Students often had to pursue higher education outside the state amid serious communication and connectivity challenges.

He said that improved educational infrastructure, better access to institutions and expanded opportunities for higher learning have created a more conducive environment for students today. Urging students to make the most of these opportunities, he encouraged them to remain focused on their goals and continue striving for excellence.

As a special initiative, Mein announced sponsorship for five students from the Tai Ahom community to receive free coaching at the UPSC Coaching Centre in Namsai, which is being run by the Tai Khamti Students Union.

Emphasising the importance of cultural preservation, he spoke about the shared heritage of the six Tai communities of Northeast India—Tai Ahom, Tai Khamti, Tai Phake, Tai Aiton, Tai Khamyang and Tai Turung. He noted that while each community has its own distinct language, customs and traditions, they are united by common historical and cultural roots within the broader Tai civilization.

He stressed the need to preserve traditional languages, vocabulary and cultural practices, observing that many ancient words and customs are gradually disappearing. Calling for greater cultural unity, Mein urged community members to safeguard their heritage while respecting the unique identity of each Tai group.

Speaking on the occasion, Namsai MLA and Advisor to the Ministers of RWD and Sports & Youth Affairs, Chau Zingnu Namchoom, highlighted the opportunities and challenges of the modern era and underscored the importance of focus, discipline and continuous learning.

The lawmaker remarked that academic scores alone do not determine success and that perseverance, dedication and a clear sense of purpose enable individuals to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. He also encouraged students to acquire knowledge and skills that would help them contribute meaningfully to society.

He urged the youth to stay away from drugs and other social evils, uphold strong moral values and remain connected to their cultural roots, history and identity. He also appreciated ATASU, Namsai District Committee, for organising the felicitation programme and motivating young students.

Held under the theme, “Honouring Excellence, Preserving Heritage, Inspiring Future Generations,” the programme witnessed the felicitation of meritorious Class X and XII students and other special achievers. The event was attended by members of the All Tai Singpho Council, Tai Khamti Development Society, Tai Khamti Students Union, All Namsai Youth Association, ATASU office-bearers, community leaders, teachers, parents and students.
