Itanagar, Jun 5: The National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS), Dirang celebrated World Environment Day and its 13th foundation year by launching a massive plantation drive under the Government of India’s flagship campaign, “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam,” at Dirang in West Kameng district on Friday.
As part of the initiative, NIMAS planted 1,300 saplings, symbolising its 13-year journey of promoting adventure, leadership and environmental stewardship. More than 100 NIMAS staff members and 150 NCC cadets participated in the drive, demonstrating a collective commitment towards environmental conservation and sustainable development.
A variety of indigenous and fruit-bearing species, including peach, plum, litchi, walnut, orange, deodar and pine, were planted across the NIMAS campus and its adjoining areas. The initiative aims to strengthen the local ecosystem while creating a lasting environmental legacy for future generations.
The plantation programme was attended by West Kameng Deputy Commissioner Dr Dilip Kumar and Additional Deputy Commissioner of Dirang, Choiki Dondup, who joined NIMAS personnel and NCC cadets in planting saplings.
Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner highlighted the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges. He noted that climate change and environmental degradation require active participation from every citizen and emphasized that planting and nurturing trees remains one of the most effective ways to restore ecological balance, improve biodiversity and secure a healthier future.
Addressing the gathering, NIMAS Director Col Ranveer Singh Jamwal said the institute chose to celebrate its 13th anniversary by giving back to nature. He described the plantation of 1,300 trees as a humble contribution towards environmental conservation and reaffirmed the institute's commitment to protecting the natural environment.
“Adventure and nature are inseparable. As an institution dedicated to exploring and understanding the outdoors, it is our responsibility to preserve and protect the environment. Through this initiative, we hope to inspire young people and the wider community to become active custodians of nature,” he said.
The event concluded with a pledge by all participants to not only plant trees but also ensure the survival and growth of the saplings through sustained care and maintenance. The plantation drive reflects NIMAS’ continued commitment to environmental sustainability, community engagement and responsible adventure practices.
