RONO HILLS, Jun 5: In a significant step towards promoting environmental sustainability and green campus initiatives, the NSS Cell of Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) in collaboration with the Sanitary Section of the University, organized a Mass Plantation Drive on the occasion of World Environment Day 2026 at the RGU campus under broad parameters of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment).
The plantation programme was graced by Rajiv Gandhi University Vice Chancellor Prof S K Nayak, Registrar Dr N T Rikam, officers of the RGU, faculty members, staff, NSS volunteers, and students.
The VC motivated the students to imbibe environment friendly approach in life and be mindful while utilizing the resources.
The Registrar urged the students to maintain the NSS Park and the coffee plantations in such a way that it will provide aesthetic value and platform for learning specially among the students.
Speaking on the occasion, Gomar Basar, Dy Registrar (IISYD), highlighted the importance of imbibing the environment friendly actions in one’s daily life, He also emphasized the immense potential of coffee cultivation in Arunachal Pradesh. He noted that many parts of the state possess ideal climatic conditions for coffee cultivation, a fact that remains largely unknown to many people. He further stated that scientific coffee cultivation can become an important source of livelihood and generate substantial revenue for local communities while promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
Dr Tage Monju, NSS Programme Officer, informed that the NSS Cell, with the active cooperation of the Sanitary Section, has established a coffee orchard within the RGU campus, as part of the World Environment Day celebration. In addition, a litchi orchard has also been created within the RGU premises.
Dr Monju stated that the NSS Cell remains committed to environmental conservation and strives every year to undertake meaningful initiatives that contribute towards a greener and more sustainable future. She expressed hope that the newly established orchards would not only enhance the campus greenery but also serve as demonstration sites to encourage students and the community to adopt environmentally responsible practices.
Likha Talin, Sanitary Inspector, expressed his happiness over collaborating with the NSS Cell for the noble cause of environmental protection.
The programme concluded with a collective pledge by the participants to protect nature, promote plantation activities, and work together towards building a cleaner, greener, and healthier environment for future generations.
