PASIGHAT, Jun 17: The Centre of Excellence in Millets, College of Agriculture (CoA), Central Agricultural University (Imphal), Pasighat, organized a Millet Seed Distribution Programme to promote millet cultivation and strengthen nutritional and livelihood security among farming communities of East Siang district.
Attended by 60 farmers from different villages of East Siang district, the event saw a total of 150 kg of ML 365 Finger Millet seed and 100 kg of CSV 31 Sorghum seed distributed to the participants for cultivation during the upcoming cropping season.
Supported and funded by the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Sorghum and Small Millets, ICAR–Indian Institute of Millets Research (ICAR-IIMR), Hyderabad, the initiative was conducted under the leadership of Prof (Dr) Sanjay Swami, Dean CoA (Pasighat).
The programme was coordinated by Dr Premaradhya N, Nodal officer & Principal Investigator, Centre of Excellence in Millets, under the guidance of Dr Sangappa, Senior Scientist and Nodal Officer, NEH Component, ICAR-IIMR, Hyderabad.
Speaking on the occasion, the organizers highlighted the importance of millets as climate-resilient, nutritious, and sustainable crops capable of enhancing food and nutritional security while providing livelihood opportunities to farmers in the North Eastern Hill region.
The farmers expressed their appreciation for the initiative and assured active adoption of millet cultivation technologies promoted through the Centre of Excellence in Millets. The programme concluded with seed distribution and interaction with the farmers on improved millet production practices.
