Khandu calls for environmental conservation at rhododendron plantation drive in Tawang

Itanagar, Jun 22: Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Monday underscored the importance of environmental conservation while participating in a mass rhododendron plantation drive in Tawang, describing it as a vital step towards preserving the region’s rich ecological heritage.

Stating that every sapling planted today strengthens forests, protects mountains and preserves biodiversity, Khandu said such initiatives help leave a richer natural legacy for future generations.

The Chief Minister said the plantation drive builds on the momentum generated during the observance of World Environment Day on June 5 and reflects the collective commitment towards environmental protection and sustainable development.

Highlighting Tawang's unique ecological significance, Khandu noted that the district is home to one of the richest diversities of rhododendrons in the Himalayan region, making it a shared responsibility to protect and expand this invaluable natural wealth.

He appreciated the Tawang Forest Division and the Indian Army for jointly organising the plantation programme and lauded the enthusiastic participation of NCC cadets in the initiative.

The plantation drive forms part of ongoing efforts to enhance green cover, conserve biodiversity and promote environmental awareness among the younger generation.

The initiative has been hailed as a significant step towards safeguarding Tawang’s rich natural heritage and fostering greater environmental awareness among the younger generation. Planting rhododendron saplings is an investment in a greener, healthier and more sustainable future, a participant said.

The programme witnessed active participation from officials, Army personnel, NCC cadets and local residents, reflecting a shared commitment towards environmental conservation and the preservation of the region's biodiversity.
