Itanagar, Jul 1: Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday called on Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen (Retd) KT Parnaik at Lok Bhavan in Itanagar, where the two leaders discussed flood damages, agricultural development and measures to strengthen rural infrastructure in the state.
During the meeting, the Governor apprised the Union Minister of the extensive damage caused by recent floods across several districts and sought continued support from the Central Government for relief, rehabilitation and restoration of essential infrastructure and livelihoods.
Highlighting Arunachal Pradesh’s vast agricultural potential, Parnaik said that with focused support from the Centre, the state could emerge as a major hub of sustainable and high-value agriculture. He stressed the need for strengthening irrigation facilities, rural connectivity, market access and agricultural infrastructure to boost the rural economy and contribute to the vision of an Atmanirbhar and developed Arunachal Pradesh.
The Governor also underscored the state's natural advantage in organic farming and called for support in developing certified organic clusters, promoting natural farming, encouraging high-value horticultural crops and branding “Organic Arunachal” products in national and international markets.
He further sought assistance for establishing research centres, enhancing farmer training programmes and promoting climate-resilient agricultural practices through institutions such as Indian Council of Agricultural Research and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development.
Emphasising the importance of technology and innovation in agriculture, Parnaik advocated greater support for agri-startups, skill development initiatives, food processing units and agro-based industries to create employment opportunities for youth and strengthen the rural economy.
In response, Chouhan assured the Governor of the Centre’s full support for the state's development priorities and agricultural growth.
Chouhan plants Bokul sapling at Lok Bhavan
Earlier, as part of a tradition observed at Lok Bhavan, Chouhan planted a Bokul sapling on the premises during his visit to Arunachal Pradesh.
The Bokul tree, known for its fragrant flowers, evergreen nature and ecological significance, was planted as a symbol of environmental stewardship and sustainable development. The sapling will serve as a lasting reminder of the Union Minister’s visit and reinforce the message that development and environmental conservation must progress together.
The initiative reflects Lok Bhavan’s continued commitment to promoting a greener and healthier environment through the participation of visiting dignitaries and public leaders.
