Itanagar, Jul 26: Chief Minister Pema Khandu has commended the 2/9 Gorkha Rifles for their 'exemplary service' and contributions toward humanitarian outreach and border infrastructure during their 33-month tenure in the high-altitude Mago-Chuna sector of Tawang district, bordering China.
In an official commendation certificate, as the battalion prepares to move to its next assignment, Khandu expressed gratitude to all ranks of the unit, noting that their efforts strengthened both national security and civil-military ties along the frontier.
"For over 33 months, the Battalion stood as a symbol of courage and commitment, transforming lives through humanitarian outreach, medical camps, community development, promotion of border tourism, environmental initiatives, and strong civil-military cooperation," Khandu said in a message appreciating the troop deployment that endured three severe winters.
Highlighting key achievements of the battalion, the commendation highlighted the rescue of 13 civilians during a road accident at Baisakhi in October 2025, the execution of welfare projects under Operation Sadbhavana, including the construction of community halls, installation of solar street lights, and educational support.
The unit conducted 49 medical camps benefiting over 1,240 civilians, distributed winter relief to local graziers, and planted nearly 1,000 saplings in high-altitude zones to aid ecological restoration.
To boost border tourism and local engagement, the battalion spearheaded initiatives such as the Shangri La Calling Festival, the development of Gongkar La Lake with tourist safety applications, the Tulung La Bike Rally, and the rejuvenation of the Chhetri War Memorial.
"Their service has strengthened both our national security and the bond between the Army and the people of Arunachal Pradesh. Arunachal Pradesh will always remember your service with pride," Khandu added, addressing Commanding Officer Col Y Romen Singh and all ranks of the battalion. (PTI)
