TAWANG, Jul 27: The Tawang District Level Narco Coordination (NCORD) Committee on Monday reviewed the district's anti-drug strategy and resolved to strengthen surveillance, enforcement and public participation to prevent drug abuse and other unlawful activities in Tawang.
The meeting, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo, was held at the DC's conference hall and attended by Deputy Superintendent of Police Togum Gonggo, representatives of Central government agencies, paramilitary forces, Market Welfare Committees, Gaon Burahs, NGOs and other stakeholders.
The meeting began with the introduction of the newly posted DySP Togum Gonggo, who sought suggestions from members to improve coordination among agencies in tackling drug-related offences and maintaining law and order.
During the discussion, Old Market Bazar secretary Dawa Tashi stressed the need for stricter verification of Inner Line Permits (ILPs), particularly for hawkers and temporary vendors. He also urged the district administration to address the issue of stray dogs and animals in market areas, saying they create traffic congestion and pose safety risks.
Representatives of Central intelligence agencies and paramilitary forces shared inputs on improving surveillance, intelligence sharing and coordinated enforcement to curb illegal activities.
Addressing the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner directed the district police to intensify night patrolling, especially in vulnerable and poorly lit areas outside routine patrol routes. She also instructed the police to conduct regular surprise checks at isolated locations to deter criminal activities.
Angmo reiterated the need for surprise inspections in private schools and hostels, noting that while government institutions are monitored regularly, private educational institutions also require equal attention. She directed the concerned departments to organise awareness programmes on drug abuse and ensure effective follow-up action.
Appealing for greater public participation, the DC urged members of Market Welfare Committees, Gaon Burahs, NGOs and residents to promptly report suspicious activities, particularly in areas with inadequate lighting or limited surveillance.
The meeting concluded with all stakeholders reaffirming their commitment to strengthen inter-agency coordination, enhance public awareness and maintain sustained vigilance to ensure a safe and drug-free Tawang. (DIPRO)
