BASAR, Jul 31: A hands-on training programme on the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026 was organised at the DC Conference Hall in Basar on Thursday to promote scientific and sustainable waste management practices in rural areas of Leparada district.
Organised under the aegis of the Panchayat, Rural Development and Urban Development Departments, the programme brought together PRI members, Govt officials and representatives from Basar and Sago circles. It aimed to sensitise rural communities and strengthen the implementation of waste management practices, with a special focus on segregation of waste at source.
Welcoming the participants, CO-cum-Member Secretary (Panchayat) Asunam Perme highlighted the objectives of the training and stressed the importance of adopting proper waste management practices at the community level.
Assistant Engineer (UD) Tei Taba gave a detailed presentation on the key provisions of the SWM Rules, 2026, and their implementation at the grassroots level. Junior Engineer Kenyir Basar conducted a practical session demonstrating methods of waste segregation and management at source.
District Panchayat Nodal Officer Bomli Basar explained the roles and responsibilities of Gram Panchayats and village communities in maintaining cleanliness and ensuring proper collection, management and disposal of solid waste.
The programme also featured an interactive session during which participants raised queries on practical aspects of waste management, which were addressed by the resource persons.
In his concluding remarks, ADC-cum-DPDO Tamo Riba urged all stakeholders to translate the knowledge gained into practical action and community-led initiatives. He emphasised that effective waste management requires the active participation of Gram Panchayats, Govt departments and local communities to build cleaner, healthier and more sustainable villages.
The training is expected to strengthen the capacity of Gram Panchayats and village communities in adopting source segregation, scientific waste management and responsible waste disposal practices across the district. (DIPRO)
