DEOMALI, Aug 1: In a remarkable display of community spirit and collective responsibility, residents of Deomali and adjoining areas came together to repair the long-deserted and demolished Deomali–Margherita Road, a vital lifeline connecting Tirap district with neighbouring Assam.
The deteriorated condition of the road had been a matter of concern for years, causing immense hardship to daily commuters, students, patients, traders, transporters, and business establishments who depend on the route for their everyday activities.
Recognizing the urgent need for immediate intervention, the people of Deomali, under the leadership of Tirap Deputy Commissioner Badonlum Tawsik, and Assistant Commissioner-cum-In-Charge ADC Deomali, Indira Thonuong Riba, joined hands with Tirap ZPC John K K Matey, ZPMs of Deomali and Soha, and members of the public to undertake the road repair works.
The initiative was made possible through voluntary contributions, both in cash and kind, from contractors, traders, government employees, and local residents, reflecting a strong sense of shared responsibility and commitment towards public welfare.
As part of the initiative, a mass social service programme was organized on Friday, during which volunteers enthusiastically participated in repairing the damaged stretches of the road, significantly improving its motorability and easing difficulties faced by commuters.
The successful repair drive stands as a shining example of unity, cooperation, and community participation, demonstrating how collective action can effectively address pressing civic issues in the absence of immediate infrastructure support.
In his remarks, the DC expressed hope that the collective effort would inspire similar community-driven initiatives in the future while also drawing the attention of the concerned authorities towards providing a permanent and durable solution for the Deomali–Margherita Road.
The DC also acknowledged the wholehearted support extended by Environment & Forests & DoTCL Minister Wangki Lowang, ZPC Matey and his team, as well as women leaders from Khonsa, whose active participation further strengthened the community-led initiative and contributed to its successful execution.
