PASIGHAT, Aug 1: In a proud moment for Arunachal Pradesh, January Tali from Upper Siang district and Hachu Lombo from Dibang Valley district, have created history by becoming the first two women from the State to successfully scale Mt Kun (7,077 metres) in the Zanskar region of Ladakh.
The duo reached the summit at 6 am on July 27, marking a major milestone for mountaineering in the State. Their successful ascent came after an 11-day expedition that began on July 16, when the team departed from Leh towards the Zanskar region. The expedition was organized by Cho Expedition.
Mt Kun is among the highest peaks in the Zanskar range of the Indian Himalayas. Known for its steep snow slopes, glaciers and harsh weather conditions, the mountain is considered one of India’s most demanding high-altitude climbing expeditions, requiring extensive acclimatization, technical skills and exceptional physical endurance.
The expedition comprised a mixed team of nine climbers—two women and seven men—excluding Sherpas. Of the nine participants, only four climbers successfully reached the summit, while the remaining members were forced to abandon their summit attempt due to the extreme conditions, underscoring the difficulty of the climb.
Both Tali and Lombo are expected to receive official summit certificates from the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), New Delhi, in recognition of their successful ascent of Mt Kun.
