AALO, Aug 3: In a sustained drive against illegal vehicle modifications and to maintain a noise-free environment, the West Siang District Police have successfully seized 128 modified silencers from two-wheelers operating in and around Aalo township over the last six months.
With West Siang Superintendent of Police Kardak Riba showing the way, the special drive was carried out under the supervision of DySP (HQs) Taba Biroy. The operations on the ground were led by SI Gumdo Ete, OC Traffic Aalo, and Inspector Yomken Riram, OC PS Aalo.
All the seized modified silencers were destroyed today by JCB after due permission was obtained from the West Siang Deputy Commissioner. The destruction was carried out in presence of Jumkar Karbi, Assistant Commissioner and town magistrate.
Speaking to the media, the SP strongly appealed to all youngsters and college-going students to refrain from fitting or using modified silencers. Such illegal modifications not only cause severe noise pollution and disturb students, residents and the general public, but also attract penal provisions under Sections 190 and 52 of the Motor Vehicles Act, he said.
The SP clarified that, in order to send a strong deterrent message, only the modified silencers of first-time offenders have been seized and destroyed. However, in case of subsequent violations, the vehicles will be seized and forwarded to court. Offences will be registered against the owners, who may face imprisonment for a period of up to six months.
He further urged parents not to allow their children below 18 years of age to ride two-wheelers. Violation of this provision attracts a fine of Rs 25,000, and parents will also be held liable under the law.
Moreover, the senior official stated that West Siang District Police remain committed to maintaining peace, order and a noise-free environment in Aalo and adjoining areas, while adding that strict enforcement will continue in this regard. (DIPRO)
