Nacho landslide claims four lives; all bodies recovered

Itanagar, Aug 16: Four persons lost their lives after a landslide struck a PMGSY road cutting site near Nacho in Upper Subansiri district on Friday, with all the bodies recovered during a search and rescue operation conducted on Saturday.

The incident occurred at around 4 pm on August 14 at Ngolo Siko, Kio Joring, along the PMGSY road connecting Charu village under Nacho jurisdiction.

The deceased have been identified as Tadu Baki (30), son of Tasa Baki, and Taji Rai (25), son of Yapong Rai, both residents of Nengying, Charu; Markarosh Basumatary (26); and Babul Ali (28), a JCB driver.

Another person, Sonar Basumatary, sustained injuries in the incident and was initially treated at Daporijo hospital. He has since been referred to Itanagar for further treatment.

The search and rescue operation began at 7 am on Saturday and concluded at 3:30 pm after the bodies of all four victims were retrieved from the debris.

The operation involved 12 personnel from the local police, Fire and Emergency Services and SDRF, besides local volunteers.

The landslide has also disrupted traffic movement, with the NH-77 at Nacho continuing to remain red, according to the latest update from the DDMO, Upper Subansiri.

The authorities continue to monitor the situation in the affected area.
