PASIGHAT, Aug 21: Ayi: Ke Ekum, an NGO, celebrated World Senior Citizens Day at the IGJ Govt Hr Sec School auditorium here today, with a focus on honouring the dignity, wisdom and valuable contributions of senior citizens.
As part of the celebration, senior citizens presented Ka:do, an age-old traditional song, adding a distinct cultural touch to the occasion.
Speaking as chief guest on the occasion, local MLA Tapi Darang appreciated the initiative of Ayi: Ke Ekum for creating a warm and welcoming space for senior citizens. He observed that loneliness is among the major challenges faced by elderly people and stressed that society has a collective responsibility to ensure that senior citizens spend their later years with happiness, dignity and companionship. He also presented gifts to senior citizens who recorded the highest attendance at the centre.
On the occasion, the official logo of Ayi: Ke Ekum was formally launched by the MLA.
In her address, M T Padung, Deputy Director ICDS, appreciated the founders and members of Ayi: Ke Ekum for their thoughtful initiative. Emphasizing the importance of elders in society, she said, “When the roots are strong, the branches flourish,” and encouraged senior citizens to share their knowledge, wisdom and life experiences with younger generations. Describing elders as the pillars of society, she said that reaching old age is a blessing that enables one to witness generations of family and the changing journey of life.
Earlier, treasury officer and general secretary Ayi: Ke Ekum, Tigul Megu, spoke about the vision behind the organization, which provides a platform for senior citizens above 70 years to spend quality time together, share experiences and overcome loneliness. She highlighted that “wisdom comes with age and experience”, adding that the stories, values and experiences of elders play an important role in shaping society and guiding future generations.
