NERIST student dies in road accident at Nirjuli

Itanagar, Aug 28: A final-year Agricultural Engineering student of the North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST), Nirjuli, died in a road accident on NH-415 near the institute, a police source said on Friday.

According to police, the accident occurred on Thursday at around 4:30 am near the NERIST South Block, shortly before the U-turn. At the time, Nirjuli Police personnel were conducting naka checking near HDFC Bank, in front of Nirjuli Police Station, from 2 am to 5 am.

The police team noticed the accident and immediately rushed to the spot, where they found a person lying injured on the road after his scooty collided with the road divider.

The injured person was evacuated to the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), Naharlagun, in a police vehicle for medical treatment. However, he was declared dead by the attending doctor upon arrival at the hospital.

The deceased was identified as Gagan Paul, son of Rabi Paul and a resident of Cooch Behar, West Bengal. He was a final-year student of Agricultural Engineering at NERIST. He was riding a scooty bearing registration number AR-01-7074 when the accident occurred.

Later, at around 11 am, a written FIR was received from the NERIST authorities. Accordingly, Nirjuli Police registered an unnatural death (UD) case, Nirjuli PS UD Case No. 06/2026, the police said, adding that the case is under investigation.
