Man arrested for molesting minor

ITANAGAR, Sep 8: A person has been arrested by the Women Police Station Itanagar for allegedly molesting a minor.

ITA WPS Case No 77/2026 was registered under Sections 75(2)/79 BNS, read with Sections 10/12/14/15(2) of the POCSO Act and Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act against the accused identified as Biri Tara (50).

The arrest followed the emergence of a highly disturbing video circulating on social media that allegedly showed the accused abusing the victim minor girl.

According to police, the accused was arrested on 2nd September.

“The complaint reported an alleged child abuse by an elderly person at or around Sanglo Potom, Itanagar. The informer also shared videos purportedly showing the person inappropriately touching a child aged approximately 7–8 years,” police said, adding that the accused was arrested within one hour of registering the case.

The accused was produced before the Court of the Special Judge, Yupia on September 3rd and is currently under judicial custody.

The incident triggered a strong public reaction, with people demanding strict action against the accused.

Meanwhile, the Itanagar police urged to exercise caution against sharing of the purported video.

‘Section 67B in The Information Technology Act, 2000 specifically punishes publishing, browsing, or transmitting material that depicts children in a sexually explicit or abusive act in electronic form.

Section 23 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 strictly prohibits media and public disclosure of a child victim's identity to protect their privacy, dignity, and mental well-being.’
