West Siang ‘set’ to host maiden Inter-Departmental Sports Tournament 2026

AALO, Sep 12: West Siang district is gearing up for the first-ever Inter-Departmental Sports Tournament later this month, with over 1,000 government employees from 23 departments set to compete from September 18 to 30 in a celebration of fitness, teamwork and camaraderie.

The tournament will feature men’s football, men’s and women’s volleyball, women’s tug-of-war and badminton. The badminton competition will include singles and doubles events for men and women across Open, Sub-Veteran and Veteran categories.

Adding a competitive edge to the inaugural edition, departments will not only chase individual titles but also vie for the overall championship. A cumulative points system will determine the winner, with points earned across different disciplines deciding which department walks away with the coveted overall crown.

Organisers said the tournament has been designed to go beyond medals and trophies by creating a common platform for government employees to interact outside their workplaces, strengthen inter-departmental bonds and embrace a healthier lifestyle through sport.

Conceptualized by District Weightlifting Association president Bommi Bagra and District Sports Officer Eken Bam, the tournament is organized under the chairmanship of West Siang Deputy Commissioner Mindo Loyi, with support from Sports Minister Kento Jini and MLAs of the district.
