BOMDILA, Sep 21: A District Level NCORD meeting was held at the DC’s Conference Hall here on Monday to review measures against drug abuse, substance addiction and illegal cannabis cultivation in West Kameng district.
The meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Dr Dilip Kumar and attended by Superintendent of Police Dr Dorjee Wangdi Thongon and representatives of SIB, SSB, Police, Health Department, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) and other stakeholder agencies.
NCORD Nodal Officer S Wangmu Mosabi briefed the participants on initiatives undertaken in the district to curb drug abuse and substance addiction. Officer-in-Charge (Crime) Gagam Aje, through a presentation, outlined measures taken by the district police and shared details of cases registered under the NDPS Act.
Deputy Commissioner Dr Dilip Kumar expressed concern over the rising number of NDPS-related cases, particularly reports of increasing cannabis cultivation in the Kalaktang area. He appealed to villagers to refrain from cultivating cannabis and warned that violations would invite action under the NDPS Act.
The DC directed the ADC Kalaktang and AC Balemu to hold coordination meetings with villagers, PRI leaders, Gaon Burahs, senior citizens and other stakeholders to identify the forward and backward linkages associated with cannabis cultivation and trafficking.
He also directed authorities to identify landowners who allow cannabis cultivation on their land and cautioned Gaon Burahs against non-cooperation with the anti-drug drive.
Dr Kumar urged the NCB and CBN to organise a cannabis destruction programme in West Kameng and assured full cooperation from the district administration. He also called for concerted efforts by all stakeholders to address the involvement of external elements in the illegal cannabis trade and prevent the problem from becoming a wider security and social concern.
Representatives of various departments and agencies shared their observations and suggestions during the review. The meeting concluded with the observance of the sixth year of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, reaffirming the district administration’s commitment to combating drug abuse and promoting a drug-free society.
