PASIGHAT, Sep 24: Mithun breeders from across Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday called for greater coordination, scientific breeding and community participation for the conservation and sustainable development of the indigenous Siangmi Mithun breed.
The call was made during the first general meeting of the newly formed Siangmi Mithun Breeders Association (SMBA) held at the Siang Guest House here, which brought together breeders and representatives from Leparada, Shi-Yomi, West Siang, Upper Siang, Siang and East Siang districts.
The meeting focused on strengthening collective efforts for genetic improvement, scientific management, breed conservation and sustainable Mithun-based livelihoods.
Director of ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun (NRCM), Dr Girish Patil S, in a pre-recorded message, emphasised the role of organised breeder participation in conservation and scientific development of the breed.
Arunachal Pradesh Forest Corporation Ltd (APFCL) Chairman Nalong Mize, who attended the meeting as chief guest, highlighted the importance of conserving the state's indigenous livestock resources and urged collective efforts for sustainable Mithun-based livelihoods.
Jomlo Mongku Mithun Farmers Federation chairman Tadang Tamut presented the vision and mission of the SMBA, stressing greater coordination and breeder participation. Siang Mithun Farmers Club president Tatok Panor also called for strengthening farmer participation and community-based conservation practices.
During the meeting, breeders shared field experiences and concerns relating to breeding, conservation and the future development of Siangmi Mithun.
Dr Harshit Kumar, Scientist at ICAR-NRCM, presented a scientific plan and roadmap covering scientific breeding, genetic improvement, farmer-led recording, capacity building, technology adoption and institutional collaboration.
The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks by Er B Tayeng. The SMBA is expected to serve as a common platform for Mithun breeders to work with scientific institutions, government agencies and other stakeholders for safeguarding and developing the breed.
