ITANAGAR, Oct 2: The North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST), Nirjuli joined hands with the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) to conduct a one-day awareness workshop on ‘Women Empowerment and Leadership, Prevention of Drug-Abuse, Mental Health, Gender Equality and Third Gender Inclusion, and Legal Rights of Women and Children’ today.
Receiving an overwhelming response with around 360 participants, including students, faculty members, invited guests and other participants, the workshop aimed to sensitize young people on some of the ‘pressing’ social issues affecting contemporary society.
The inaugural programme was graced by Prof Narendranath S, Director NERIST; Yalem Taga Burang, Chairperson APSCW; and Prof Sarsing Gao, Dean (Academic), NERIST. In their addresses, the dignitaries highlighted the importance of awareness, education and collective responsibility in addressing contemporary social challenges. They emphasised the need to empower women, protect the well-being of young people, promote gender equality and inclusion, and create greater awareness of legal rights. They also underscored the important role of educational institutions in nurturing not only academically competent students but also socially responsible, sensitive and informed citizens.
The programme brought together resource persons from diverse professional backgrounds. Senior journalist Tongam Rina delivered a session on “Women Empowerment and Leadership,” highlighting the importance of education, confidence, equal opportunities and greater participation of women in leadership and decision-making.
Dr Igam Bagra, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, TRIHMS, Naharlagun, addressed the participants on “Drug-Abuse Awareness, Prevention and Mental Health.” He highlighted the physical, psychological and social consequences of substance abuse, particularly among young people, while stressing the importance of prevention, early intervention, counselling, family support and timely professional assistance.
A session on “Gender Equality and Third Gender Inclusion” was delivered by Dr Yuma Narah, who sensitised the participants to the importance of dignity, equality, acceptance and inclusion irrespective of gender identity. The session encouraged young people to challenge stereotypes and contribute towards building a more respectful and inclusive society.
Advocate Nikita Danggen spoke on “Legal Rights of Women and Children (POCSO)” and highlighted important legal safeguards available for women and children.
