KHONSA, Oct 8: The vibrant sporting traditions of Tirap came alive at Nehru Stadium, Khonsa, on Thursday as the Seva Sankalp Utsav – Traditional Sports Competition brought together participants, community members and sports enthusiasts in a lively celebration of the district’s indigenous games and sporting heritage.
Organised by the Department of Youth Affairs & Sports, Tirap district, the event was more than a sporting competition. It was a celebration of the games that have been part of community life for generations—games rooted in strength, agility, coordination, courage and, above all, the spirit of togetherness.
The stadium echoed with cheers as participants competed in Dali Haka Hinam, Guli Danda, Bamboo Archery, Bamboo Running, Tug-of-War, and Bamboo Climbing, showcasing traditional skills with remarkable energy and enthusiasm. Each event brought its own excitement, with participants drawing encouragement from the spectators and fellow competitors.
Noah Mongku, District Sports Officer, Tirap, coordinated the sporting activities and proceedings of the competition.
The competitions saw enthusiastic participation from different parts of Tirap, with participants putting their traditional skills to the test.
In Dali Haka Hinam, Yanglu Teyang of Kapu came first, followed by Sinath Khoiyang (Khonsa-2nd), and Wangpram Aboh (Dadam-3rd).
‘Guli Danda’ saw Honte Mesia (Khela-Bunting) in first place, Jopoi Agi (Dadam-2nd), and Tezo Matey (Borduria-3rd).
Bamboo Archery competition was won by Mohrang Tesia of Khela-Bunting.
In Bamboo Running, Wangbom Lowang of Dadam was adjudged first, Jangliam Tesia (Khela-Bunting-2nd), and Tezo Matey (Borduria-3rd).
Bamboo Climbing saw Pangchak Wangso of Kapu in first spot, Wangpram Lowang (Khonsa-2nd), Sanloi (Soha-3rd).
In Tug- of-War (Female), Khonsa came in 1st; Dadam 2nd and Khela- Bunting 3rd, while in Male section, Deomali secured 1st spot, Kapu 2nd and Dadam 3rd.
The winners were presented Certificates of Merit in recognition of their sportsmanship, skill, dedication and contribution towards preserving and promoting the traditional sports and cultural heritage of Arunachal Pradesh.
With cheers from the sidelines and determination on the field, the Seva Sankalp Utsav turned into a spirited celebration of Tirap’s traditional strength, sporting talent and cultural identity, proving that some of the oldest games can still create some of the liveliest moments today.
