Traditional sports competitions mark Seva Sankalp Utsav in U/Subansiri

DAPORIJO, Oct 8: The Seva Sankalp Utsav – District-level Traditional Sports Competition was held today at the Rijo Mini Outdoor Stadium here, with the objective of promoting traditional sports, indigenous culture, youth participation and a spirit of healthy competition among the people of Upper Subansiri district.

Organized by the District Sports Office, Upper Subansiri, in collaboration with the District Administration, the programme was graced by Taniya Soki, local MLA-cum-Advisor to Minister RD & Panchayati Raj, as chief guest, while Jyoti Jeram Sikom, ZPC Upper Subansiri, attended as guest of honour.

A major highlight of the programme was the inauguration of the traditional sports competitions, showcasing the rich indigenous sporting heritage of the State. The competitions were conducted on a ZPM constituency-wise. The traditional sports disciplines included Tug-of-War, Bamboo Archery, Guli Danda, Bamboo Climbing, ‘Dali Haka Hinam’, and Bamboo Poles/Stick Running.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from youth and community members, providing a vibrant platform for showcasing strength, skill, agility, teamwork and traditional knowledge.

The Tug-of-War was organized as a team event, while the other disciplines were conducted as individual events. Winners at the district level will represent Upper Subansiri at the State-level competition.

Speaking on the occasion, the dignitaries emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting traditional games and indigenous sporting practices, particularly among the younger generation. Such initiatives not only encourage physical fitness and sportsmanship but also help in keeping the rich cultural heritage of the State alive.

The programme also carried the important message of Nasha Mukt Yuva, encouraging young people to remain physically active, socially responsible and free from substance abuse. (DIPRO)
