TAWANG, Oct 27: The Army Sports Institute (ASI), Pune, in collaboration with the Indian Army’s Gajraj Corps, the Tawang district administration and the Tawang District Archery Association (TDAA), began a three-day talent scouting and selection trial here on Tuesday to identify promising sportspersons from Arunachal Pradesh.
The initiative aims to provide talented young athletes an opportunity to pursue professional sports training at ASI Pune under the guidance of experienced coaches and trainers.
Tawang Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo and the Deputy Commander of Tawang Brigade attended the inaugural session and encouraged the participants to demonstrate their abilities, maintain discipline and make the most of the opportunity. They also appreciated the collaborative efforts to expand sporting opportunities for the state’s youth.
The selection process includes skill tests on the first day, physical fitness assessments on the second and medical examinations on the third. A team of senior Army officers, national-level coaches and other ASI officials is conducting the trials.
More than 70 students from across Arunachal Pradesh are expected to participate.
Candidates aged 12–16 who meet the prescribed criteria may be considered for admission as cadets at ASI Pune for specialised coaching and structured sports training. Sportspersons aged 18–21 with proven national-level achievements may also be considered for direct recruitment into the Indian Army under the applicable sports recruitment process, subject to eligibility requirements.
The initiative seeks to identify and nurture the state’s sporting talent while creating pathways for young athletes to pursue careers in sports. It also reflects efforts by the Army and civil administration to strengthen youth development through sports.
