ITANAGAR, Oct 27: Gohpur MLA Utpal Borah has urged the Arunachal Pradesh Police to assist Assam Police in tracing and arresting a man accused of allegedly shooting dead his brother-in-law and injuring another family member following a domestic dispute at Kukurjan village near Hollongi along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh boundary on Monday evening.
Borah visited the incident site and interacted with the victim’s family. Condemning the killing, he appealed to the Arunachal Pradesh Home Department and police to extend all possible assistance to Assam Police in the investigation and search for the absconding accused.
He also appealed to the public to cooperate with the police in tracing the accused and stressed that he should be brought to justice in accordance with the law.
The incident triggered protests by members of the Gorkha community at Hollongi Chariali. However, following an appeal by the district administration, the protesters maintained peace, Borah said.
According to Papum Pare Superintendent of Police Taru Gusar, the accused has been identified as Kenba Kami, 42, a resident of Along East Panya in West Siang district.
Police said Kami had visited his in-laws’ residence at Rajgarh No. 2 in Lakhipur to take his wife, Deva Kumari Subba, back with him. She had reportedly been refusing to return for the past two months.
The ensuing argument allegedly escalated, with Kami opening fire using a handmade pistol. His brother-in-law, Pradip Subba, 32, died on the spot, while another brother, Raj Subba, sustained grievous injuries and was taken to hospital.
The accused allegedly fled after the shooting. Police have recovered the handmade pistol used in the incident and launched a search operation to trace him.
In her statement, Deva Kumari alleged that she had been subjected to physical abuse by her husband during their six-year marriage. She further alleged that their seven-month-old daughter had been sold by the accused to another family in Arunachal Pradesh.
Police teams from Rajgarh and Gohpur police stations, led by the Gohpur circle deputy superintendent of police, rushed to the spot after receiving information about the incident. The search for the accused is continuing.
