Arunachal gets new DGP amid Siang dam protests

ITANAGAR, Nov 3: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has appointed senior IPS officer Rajesh Kumar as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Arunachal Pradesh, replacing the incumbent Shiv Darshan Singh Jamwal, at a time when the state is witnessing escalating protests over the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP).

According to an MHA order issued on Tuesday, Jamwal, a 1995-batch AGMUT cadre officer, has been transferred to Delhi. Rajesh Kumar, also a 1995-batch IPS officer, has been appointed as the state's DGP with immediate effect.

Kumar was serving as Special Director General in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and was repatriated to his parent cadre on November 2.

The MHA order does not specify whether the leadership change is linked to the ongoing unrest over the proposed hydropower project.

The reshuffle comes amid intensifying protests against the proposed 11,200-MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), with indigenous groups opposing survey work for the mega project.
